It has to be at least 10 years since I had been provided with my first Gerber knife and since then I have been fortunate to own several in my assortment. It is obvious that there are much better high quality blades available including the ones constructed with higher spec of metal or perhaps that have a nicer finish, although Gerber products don’t cost nearly as much as those. That’s the reason why I looked forward to obtaining a Gerber Prodigy Survival Knife and I was keen to see how it would match up against some of the others within my collection. This survival knife has hundreds of dedicated enthusiasts and I wondered whether it was really as great as all that.As soon as I took it out of the package I decided this was a piece of equipment with a solid reputation. The actual sheath is properly built and is really a very good partner to the Prodigy Survival Knife. I have to say that this is a feature for Gerber because this knives’s bigger buddy, the LMF Survival Knife, also is included with an outstanding sheath. They truly get the fact that being able to carry a knife firmly as well as easily is pretty critical. The main reason I’m keen on the sheath is because it doesn’t appear cheaply built nor does it seem like it’s going to break in use or in the field. Since a knife is an essential survival gadget, you do not want to be in danger of it sliding out at an inconvenient moment. Nor do you need it attached in a way that you could not get to it quickly should you need to. This scores well on the two factors. The knife is furthermore comfortingly strong without being unbalanced or cumbersome. It’s got a pretty good point and is half serrated. Now you either love serrations or you loathe them. Gerber is falling into the former group. The LMF Survival Knife also has a half-serrated blade. I do believe these boost the functionality of the knife and can help it to to saw through anything. It’s also quite a hefty blade that won’t bend very easily if you need to pries with it.If you find this knife is actually a tad too compact for you, you might have a look at the Gerber LMF knife, which is rather larger although a little more pricey Between these you will have more than enough choice of reliable partners for all kinds of risky situations.
